Character Profile: Jack Donaghy

Again here I have chosen to research the second most important character on the programme: Jack Donaghy. He is portrayed by actor Alec Baldwin and is best known for his interesting managerial style and complicated 'mentor/mentee' relationship with Liz.

Likes: Someone who claims to thrive on fear, Jack has been bow hunting for polar bears, has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and once even drove his car into the Hudson River so he could practice escaping. His greatest achievement since working for General Electric has been the Trivection Oven, an appliance that boasts being able to cook food five time faster than a conventional oven. Comparing the oven’s characteristic three heats, he is proud of the fact that he brought movie star Tracy Jordan to TGS as the missing third heat. One of Jack’s favorite aspects of the position he holds at GE is being able to negotiate with anyone and everyone, a skill of which he is particularly gifted.

Dislikes: Mainly he dislikes Liz Lemon’s wardrobe.

Personal Life: There have been many mentions of Jack’s trouble relationships with his parents when he was young. His father, before abandoning the family when Jack was two years old, lured Jack to the deep end of a swimming pool with a puppy in order to teach Jack how to swim. Jack’s mother, who is constantly ridiculing everyone she meets, tried to enlist the boy in the Vietnam War when he was twelve to make a man out of him. She also combined two of his childhood talents into an embarrassing event of playing “The Star Spangled Banner” on his flute in front of his hockey team. Despite the problems with his mother, Jack has no trouble attracting women. He has had many an encounter with women in the spotlight. These include, but are not limited to: Condoleezza Rice, Elizabeth Hurley (in the 90’s), Martha and Alexis Stewart, BeyoncĂ© Knowles, Shakira and Katie Couric.

Love Life: Jack has had a different love interest in every season of the show so far. First there was 'Phoebe', an auctioneer who suffered from 'avian bone syndrome'. However it was soon discovered she was a gold-digger and Jack broke off their engagement after suffering a heart attack. In season 2 he began a relationship with liberal congress woman Celeste Cunningham, or 'CC'. However as Liz would say 'long distance is the wrong distance' and the couple broke up to persue their own careers. In season 3 he starts to date his mothers nurse, the Puerta Rican 'Elisa', played by Salma Hayek. However Jack ends it when he discovers Elisa killed her former husband in a crime of passion. In season 4 he juggles two women; 'Avery Jessup' played by Elizabeth Banks and childhood sweetheart 'Nancy Donovan' played by Julianne Moore. He eventually chooses Avery as it is revealed she is pregnant with his first child.

Below is a video that compiles just a small selection of clips that show Jack's insulting, yet hilarious, snipes at the female persona. Most usually that of his employee Liz Lemon.
